Completely new to West Coast Swing dance events?

What are “dance events”?

Dance events are (usually) weekend-long events (Thursday Night – Monday Morning) where you can dance, compete, watch routines, take workshops, and make friends.

For some, these weekend events are a great way to:

  • Connect with dancers who are traveling from across the country

  • Access instruction and information from professionals outside of your local area

  • Compete with and meet other dancers

  • A way to literally dance all night long (seriously, the dancing goes well into the morning)

What is West Coast Swing (WCS)?

West Coast Swing is a social dance (meaning we dance for fun and usually we are not “performing”). It’s a

  • Modern form of swing dance

  • Danced to a variety of music from top 40 to blues to hip-hop

  • No partner required

  • Fun to learn

  • Danced globally

The dance is done between two partners, usually for one song at a time in the USA (Varies by culture). So ask if you don’t know!

Generally, dancers will attend a dance without a specific partner.

It is usual to change partners each song (about four minutes), but if you and your partner are having a great time, it’s definitely OK to ask for another! Just bear in mind, they might have other people they are also eager to dance with, so don’t take it personally if they want to circle back later in the evening.
